After a long time as a capital markets workaholic in Chicago and London, I’ve spent the last year goofing off, accidentally cultivating humility by learning to surf and snowboard badly.

 

Funniest memory? After seeing the yearbook photos, I’d have to say now it’s my haircut. I don’t remember any of you warning me that I looked so stupid, or that the photo would haunt me for decades. And no, the Bay City Rollers never reunited. High school mercifully destroyed much of my long-term memory, but tidbits remain. I remember the way Melissa Bake would sort of honk when she laughed. Very Seinfeldian. “Yes, George, she IS cute, but you know, she does honk.” Once, in a parking lot, Shelly Brown dropped a spiked Coke Icee in the front seat of Jim Kang’s car. While I watched, Jim looked down in a stupor and ran straight into the side of my car. That got funnier over time. It also taught us to cut Jim off early. He’d turn bright red, lose his bearings, and then usually fall asleep (Korean Honour Student Drinking Syndrome).
 

I want to hang out with Peter Beitsch this year. Last reunion, he fell into the band while dancing. There are never enough extreme dancing partners at these things.

I have been blessed to be married to a wonderful man for the last 25 years and raise two beautiful daughters. After PCHS, I studied international relations at Georgetown, worked in Washington for a while, then attended grad school at Duke, where I got my Ph.D. in English.  I'm now married to a very tolerant nurse practitioner who is a partner in a medical practice in a nearby small town.  We have a great house in a wooded suburb, where I spend a lot of my time raising our two kids.  I also spend a lot of time with my church, most recently on the construction cmte for our new meetinghouse.  When I'm not doing those things, I teach in Duke University's interdiscinplinary Liberal Studies graduate program, and sometimes administer parts of the program.  I also write (some academic stuff, some nonfiction general interest, and I'm beginning to do some fiction) and teach writing.  Lately, I'm into anything creative -- art, music, writing -- and spend way too much time worrying about the world political situation.

Like most everyone else, I spend the majority of my time working, or with my family. My favorite times are with my wife, Betsy, and our daughters, Kelly(11) and Allie(9).  Betsy and I celebrate our 17th anniversary in April, and we've had a blast raising our girls!  I'm also very busy with my career of managing professional golfers, which I've been doing for 16 years.  It requires that I travel a great deal, both domestically and internationally, and I've usually got a cell phone glued to my ear.  Nonetheless, I feel fortunate to have built a career doing something I enjoy, and am so passionate about.

 

I'll never forget one of my most embarrasing moments in high school.  It was our junior year(I believe), and I had a huge crush on Karie Nivison.  We were good friends, and one day in class we decided to pull our desks together to work on an assignment.  Shortly thereafter, I sneezed, and a huge buggar flew onto her worksheet.  Fortunately, Karie was very cool about it, but I knew then and there it wasn't meant to be!  What a stud.

I was with Jay Tripp. He had broke his jaw and I had dislocated my hip in a car wreck. We were at a dance at PC High.  A friend, who I forgot the name, came in drunk and threw up all over the benches in the gym.  We laughed then, but we really laughed when, at the loudest point of a certain song, two couples came in near the benches with the throw up. Jay Tripp, who had his jaw wired shut, yelled and yelled, but his mouth was shut and the music was too loud. I yelled, but nothing. The four of them in their nice clothes, set down on the vomit soaked bench. It took them only a few seconds to see that they were wet, and then smell that they had really been in the soup. Funny stuff.
